At 2:32 AM on Monday 12/18/2017, Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue was dispatched to 110 W Maple St in Vass for a residential structure fire. The call was received from a nearby gas station where the homeowner had run to on foot to use a phone and dial 911. First arriving units from CPFR reported a two story, single family dwelling with heavy smoke visible and fire throughout home. Engine 211 was the initial arriving engine company and deployed two 1 3/4 hose lines, attacking the fire from multiple sides. The crew of Engine 211 quickly gained control of the fire after making entry into the home with mutual aid companies from Whispering Pines, Southern Pines, and Carthage arriving soon after to assist. Hose was stretched to a nearby fire hydrant by Engine 221 and used to supply water to fire crews on the scene. The single resident of the home escaped a close call with no injuries. One dog was rescued from the home and treated on scene by firefighters before being taken to an emergency vet. The animal is expected to recover. Crews operated on scene for 2 to 3 hours insuring the fire was completely extinguished.

There were smoke detectors in the home however they seemed to not be working correctly.
