Concrete Truck Accident in Woodlake Community
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Department Chief Mike Cameron
September 5, 2025

On Friday at approximately 12:30 p.m., Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue (CPFR), Moore County EMS, and the N.C. Highway Patrol were dispatched to the 600 block of Loblolly Drive in the Woodlake Community for a wreck involving a concrete truck that had crashed on a bridge and landed in the water.

Engine 243 arrived on scene, quickly followed by Battalion Chief 21. They confirmed a concrete truck in the water with the driver still inside, though he was moving and responsive. Due to the severity of the incident, a medical helicopter was requested, and Engine 221 was assigned to establish a landing zone just outside of Woodlake. Engine 211 and Heavy Rescue 219 also responded to assist with extrication efforts.

The driver, while shaken, appeared uninjured. He was evaluated by EMS but declined transport to the hospital. Air Care was cancelled, and Engine 221 returned to service.

Because the truck was leaking diesel fuel and oil into the water, additional resources were requested to mitigate environmental impacts. The Moore County Water Rescue Task Force assisted with deploying booms to contain the spill, while Aberdeen Fire Department provided additional hazardous materials equipment, including booms, pads, and absorbents.

Rockwell Towing responded with two large wreckers to remove the truck. The impact of the crash had caused the concrete drum—containing about 10 yards of concrete—to detach from the truck, creating a significant recovery challenge due to its weight.

Moore County Public Safety assisted with coordination efforts, and once the spill was contained, EHC Environmental was tasked with removing any remaining hazardous materials from the water and right-of-way. Because of the drum’s size and location, Superior Crane was requested for removal. Their crews arrived Friday evening to develop a recovery plan, with operations beginning Saturday morning.

On Saturday, Superior Cranes assembled a large crane on-site and successfully removed the drum, which was transported back to the concrete company’s plant.

During the operation, Woodlake Security and staff worked closely with CPFR to open alternate gates in the gated community, ensuring residents-maintained access to their homes while Loblolly Drive was closed for several hours.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
