| On Saturday, Dunrovin Country Store a well-known landmark on U.S. Highway 1 between Vass and Southern Pines had a fire that appear to have started in the rear of the building and spread to much of the first floor and second floors. Ultimately this incident went to four alarms bring approximately 70 firefighters to the incident.
Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue (CPFR) and the First Alarm Assignment were dispatched to the above address for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival of the Fire Chief, he reported a working structure fire with heavy fire involvement and significant smoke conditions. The business had closed at 6:00 p.m. and the first 911 call was received at 6:37 p.m.
Engine 243 arrived and was directed to split its crew and deploy two attack lines. The first attack line was deployed to the front entrance, where firefighters forced the door open and made entry into the structure. The second attack line was deployed to the rear of the building, where firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions in the rear portion of the building and initiated a direct attack in that area.
Southern Pines Fire Department Ladder 81 arrived and was assigned to the center portion of the building. The aerial ladder was placed in a defensive position to support fire suppression operations if necessary.
The initial water supply was provided by Tanker 216 and subsequently Tanker 226. The closest fire hydrant was located on the same side of the roadway but required apparatus to operate against the flow of traffic to secure the hydrant. U.S. 1 southbound was shut down by the Moore County Sheriff's Office and Vass Police Department to provide a safe work area for fire suppression operations.
Southern Pines Engine 811 was requested to lay a large-diameter supply hose line (LDH) from the hydrant to the incident to establish a sustained water supply for the entire operation. Once the LDH was charged, Engine 243 supplied the attack lines and Ladder 81 with continuous water supply.
Due to the extreme heat conditions which produced turbulent smoke conditions, multiple crews were utilized on four separate attack lines to locate, confine, and ultimately extinguish the fire. The building contained multiple additions, various construction methods, and numerous compartmentalized areas, which created difficult fire conditions and required firefighters to chase the fire throughout the structure. Multiple crews were required to pull ceiling and open walls to complete extinguishment.
Three firefighters had minor injuries and were treated on-scene by Moore County EMS but did not need additional treatment, they have all returned to full-duty.
The incident was upgraded to a fourth alarm to provide additional firefighters and resources necessary to safely and effectively complete suppression operations.
Fire units cleared the scene at approximately 01:30 a.m.
The fire investigation was referred to the Moore County Fire Marshal's Office.

Second Alarm Assignment:
Carthage Fire Department, Aberdeen Fire Department, Pinehurst Fire Department and Moore County Public Safety.

Third Alarm Assignments:
Eastwood Fire Department, West End Fire Department, Hillcrest Fire Department (Hoke County) and Fort Bragg Fire Station 8.
Fourth Alarm Assignment:
Tramway Fire Department and Lemon Springs Fire Department (Lee County)
Duke Energy also responded to remove the power from the building.
Multiple businesses and civilians brought food and drinks to the scene in support of the firefighters. |
