By Department Chief Mike Cameron
February 20, 2021

CPFR was dispatched to a vehicle fire on Oak Run Drive, while enroute E-214 was advised that a person had been burned so Moore County EMS was added to the call. Upon the arrival of Engine 214 they reported a working vehicle fire with fire throughout the vehicle.
As the fire attack began the firefighters encountered some Phosphorus which is a common mineral used in the manufacturing of vehicles. In most cases Phosphorus is stable until it is on fire, Phosphorus is highly flammable and actually burns brighter and hotter when oxygen is introduced to burning Phosphorus, water (H2O) molecules have oxygen and will cause Phosphorus to seem to explode. Firefighters understand the dangers of this mineral and how water and oxygen impact the burning characteristics and can hamper extinguishment.
The fire was quickly extinguished and EMS treated the victim which had a burn on his hand, he was not transported to the hospital.
