August 19, 2013

Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue was dispatched to a wreck in the area of 1462 Lobelia Road; Southern Pines Fire/Rescue was dispatched as a second rescue due to a possible pin-in.
Upon the arrival of Battalion 21 he reported a single vehicle accident, car vs. tree with heavy frontend damage to the car. Upon the arrival of E-243 and R-219 the female patient was assessed and it was determined that she had significant lower extremity injuries. In an effort to stabilize her condition and to provide for proper patient packaging it was decided to remove the center post (B-Post) between the driver’s side doors. By making a larger opening the patient was able to be removed from the vehicle with the least amount of unnecessary movement for the patient.
Upon removing the patient from the vehicle patient care was transferred to Medic 28 and Medic 4 for transport to First Health of the Carolina's-Moore Regional.
The patient also had a dog that was riding in the car which was also injured in the wreck; the dog was given to a family member for transport to the emergency vet.
Extrication time from the first unit arriving on-scene until the patient was removed from the vehicle, packaged and turned over to EMS was approximately 9 minutes.

Units: E-243, R-219, Battalion 21, Medic 28 and Medic 4

Mutual Aid: R-819, Vass Police Department
