| A few months ago, local Scout member Will Coleman approached Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue about completing his Eagle Scout Project with our department.
Will presented a detailed written proposal to construct a turnout gear dryer for Fire Station 2. His plan included fundraising for materials, as well as comprehensive construction drawings and step-by-step plans for building the dryer.
A homemade PVC gear dryer is significantly more cost-effective than purchasing a commercially manufactured unit, which can cost thousands of dollars. Many fire departments utilize gear dryers because turnout gear must be washed frequently due to exposure to carcinogens and other harmful contaminants. If these cancer-causing materials remain embedded in the outer shell of the gear for extended periods, they can pose serious health risks to firefighters.
Gear dryers are also essential when turnout gear becomes saturated with water during firefighting operations. Proper drying helps maintain the integrity of the gear, ensures readiness for the next emergency response, and supports the long-term health and safety of our personnel.
Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue truly appreciates Will’s commitment, initiative, and hard work on this project. His organization, attention to detail, and dedication to serving others were evident throughout the entire process.
It is also very clear that Will is going to be successful at anything he chooses to pursue. His leadership, work ethic, and willingness to give back to his community reflect the very best qualities of Scouting and speak volumes about his character. We are proud to have played a small part in his Eagle Scout journey and are grateful for the lasting impact his project will have on the safety and readiness of our firefighters. |
